Sam Goodchild update Sam Goodchild (ex OSC & Burford school) with co skipper Conrad Colman win the second leg of the global ocean race and set new world record for a 24 hour run on a class 40 of 359 miles. No mean feet Sam having been washed overboard in a gale and big seas just off New Zealand. Conrad's skills in finding and recovering him must be applauded.
Sam is back in the UK now and will shortly be departing for France, training on Figaro for the next la solitaire du Figaro and the Transat ag2r from France to St Barts.
Sam is looking for sponsors; let him know if you would like more information.
Sam's website http://samgoodchild.com/
We have some reports from his races which we will try to put on the OSC website for your interest, (bear with us).

Lost 6 asymmetric boats tried sailing on Sunday (fools). F.Cast was for big wind so rigs were raked back then the defiantly foolish moved them back upright (Buchanan's) as the wind was not quite as strong as f.cast. The race officer was even encouraged to do 5 laps: otherwise we'd be finished before the lasers got off the line (ours/their's?)
Richard Bray hit the water 1st in his 8 & promptly capsized. Jamie was next in his 7 then Miles & Graham in an 8 followed by the Buchanan's helped afloat by John Tabor (K6). Then the proverbial hit the fan as 30+ knot gusts rolled down the lake just before the start. In the end there was about 4 or so looking likely to start excl Mike T who was held up, he says by other boats we say by good judgement or a call of nature ;-) but it included an intrepid David and Ros Brown in a laser3K. Having negotiated the last 30s dance with lasers on the start line in 30+ knots (Bob +) 2 boats got away: the Buchanan's and David in his 1st asymmetric fleet race. Mike observed from the RaceHut to offer feedback later. It was a ferocious 1st leg at the end of which the Buchanan's retired. David blasted past in the 3k, kite up and a broad smile, throwing in the odd gybe for a bit more fun (showing off more like). He managed 2-3 laps but in the end was also forced to retire - just as well as we couldn't possibly have allowed him to win his first race in the fleet ;-) Seriously, well done David for your courage and skill.
What's this "lost" all about? Well, please could you keep an eye out for a pair of teeth, which it seems, were lost in pre-start manoeuvres. We ought to warn the fishermen but it might be more fun not to.

Young Persons membership discount Dear Members,
We have a new discount from this year, it is called ‘Young Person’, and it covers members who are between 18 and 21 in the relevant membership year. It has a 60% discount on the Adult Sailing subscription. There is still the ‘Student’ discount, which is also 60% and will be applied to members over 21 on receipt of a valid Student ID card. Our other age related discount is 50% when you reach State Retirement age. In future these discounts will only be applied where a D.O.B. has been provided.
Club boat hire & junior windsurf lockers will remain at half price up to the age of 21.
We would like to be able to add dates of birth for all members but where it is not linked to a discount, this would be on a voluntary basis. However, some of the grants we apply for ask for the age ranges of our membership.
The D.O.B. information would only be used by Oxford Sailing Club for information gathering. Members would never be identified individually.

CRACKING START Happy new year and congratulations to Nick Beany who broke his own windsurfing speed record on Farmoor on Tuesday 3 January with a speed of 41.01 mph. He made 40.7 mph on Thursday, both times on a 5.7 and the RRD XFIRE 80.
The wind was from the south west with 50 mph gust at times top speed was hampered by the 1 to 2 ft chop! He thinks 45 mph is possible but perhaps in a north westerly when the water is flattest. Paul Kerns is finding some good speed too he has had 38.7 mph on the Tuesday.
So a great start to 2012!

Racing Results Sunday January 22nd
It was quite windy on Sunday and there were quite a few members who signed on but then decided not to race, or started and retired. Most OOD's do not keep a record of all the actual starters and may miss some of the "retirers". If a member does start and then retires, in order to ensure a DNF rather than a DNC, it is advisable to sign off as retired on the Race Declaration sheet. If the sheet is not available then inform the OOD. If all that fails you can always let me know.
Results now published here.
